Gary’s Recap of Cease: This season he has used Fastball/Slider for 79% of his pitches. The past 2 games though he has upped his Fastball usage to near 50% getting nearly 1/3rd to be swing and miss. He has had only one poor Start this season and that was @ Cleveland in the freezing cold. Tonight’s temp at game time will be 82 degrees. He is facing a NYY lineup that does love fastballs but he seems really comfortable at Home and he gets benefit of Yankees countering with Luis Gil, just called up from Minors. He also catches the Yankees off a travel night last night.
REST STARTERS TODAY REPORT:
1). NYY – LUIS GIL = Just called up from Minors where he is coming off 9K’s/0 Walks start. He did allow 11 walks his previous 3 starts in Minors though. Last year in 6 MLB starts for the Yankees he allowed 4 Homers in (29.1) innings.
2). NY METS – TIJUAN WALKER = He was hurt early in season and upon return his velocity is way down since. Is the shoulder still sore or is he babying it? He needs his fastball to be “on” to win games. I would wait him out to see if maybe his arm loosens up better in warmer weather and fastball returns to past solid form again.
3). PITT PIRATES JT BRUBAKER = Of late his breaking pitches are really clicking and he’s catching weak hitting Reds tonight.
4). PHILLIES ZACH WHEELER = After a slow start he is back to Cy Young levels as his past 2 starts were almost perfect. His last two starts went 6 and 6 innings and he had 15K’s and only 1 walk. When he is in a groove he is a Top 5 Pitcher in all of MLB. Here’s a case though if you bet Phillies take them (1st 5 innings) and not full game as the Phillies bullpen is very erratic (Just ask A. Nola…lol).
****PITCHING DUEL OF NIGHT?
TWINS JOSH LINDER = He was lights out his last start and had complete command of all his pitches. In fact his last 2 starts were near PERFECTO. He went 6 innings in each of past 2 starts, allowed 0 earned runs and 15K’s and 0 walks. I am just pissed he’s facing another guy in Astros Garcia tonight also off a fantastic start.
VS.
HOUSTON ASTROS LUIS GARCIA = I liked his last 2 starts and his last start his cutter was unhittable. His fastball though was a bit under his normal 95mph velocity in those 2 games so he will need to rely on the cutter again if that’s case again tonight.
