RECAP COLLEGE FOOTBALL – WEEK 0 – SATURDAY AUGUST 27th, 2022
“YEAR OF THE TRANSFER PORTAL BEGINS” – AND WE BEGIN WITH A SWEEP!
Well the new College Football Season and for us, Season #34, is now in books. We must say we don’t really grasp why they need to call this first week (WEEK 0) as it just makes no sense. It’s week 1. It feels eerie like it’s Preseason games or exhibition. But whatever they call it we are thrilled with the final results as we swept the board (4-0) and really, except for a small time in Wisky/Nebraska game, it was 4 dead nutz winners. Last season wasn’t so great at start so I surely won’t say “oh I worked hard for months to be ready for the new season”. I bet I worked much harder last offseason then I did this offseason. One of the funniest lines ever said was when Denny Green said “They were who we thought they were”! Those exact words were basically my handicap of Saturday’s College Football Picks. I still have no idea why Nebraska was a near (-13) two Touchdown favorite. It was a neutral field game and in another country no less and a first game as well. And it was a “remember” game as well for Northwestern who got slaughtered (56-7) last year to Nebraska. The linesmaker’s were basically saying Nebraksa was at least a 17-18 point favorite had the game been played at Home in Lincoln. This was a team that lost every close game it played last year and over Head Coach Frost career lost just about every close game. This though is the only pick of the four that at one time looked dicey.
Early in the 3rd quarter Nebraska scored a TD to take a 28-17 lead. Yes we were still covering but new QB Thompson looked strong. But Northwestern scored quickly and made score 28-24 and the cover rest of way never in doubt. Heck we even got a straight up win as a near 2 TD dog. Nice start for new season with that type of win. Good Omen?? We sure hope so. From there it was smooth sailing. Illinois (-11) easily handled a very weak and bottom tier Wyoming team (30 yards passing – eeeek) 38-6. Gonna be a long season for the Cowboys gang. We also saw a “star in making” for Illinois in RB Chase Brown. It will be interesting to see if Syracuse transfer T. DeVito can duplicate his once success a few years back.
Our 3rd and 4th picks didn’t kick off until late Saturday night. Both were Totals we thought were solid picks. Neither one disappointed as Nevada/New Mexico State were both “who we thought they were” = GARBAGE. We rode the “UNDER 48” as we didn’t see this as a scorefest in any way, shape, or form. And it surely wasn’t. In fact the 23-12 final score is deceiving. Nevada gained a paltry 257 total yards. They passed for an abominable 78 yards. They had one catch over 8 yards. New Mexico State actually outgained them with 303 total yards. But as most very lower tier teams do, they turned the ball over 5x. NM State ran it 25x for only 85 yards. Take away the one busted run for 23 yards and they basically averaged way under 3 yards per carry. Folks this game wasn’t pretty but for us (and anyone on the UNDER) it was a Picasso. To make matters worse for some bettors who had New Mexico State bet before gameday, the line was (+9 1/2). With the ball at Nevada’s 14 yard line with under a minute to go, New Mexico (on a nice drive) threw a costly interception on a pass into endzone corner losing a chance for an EZ FG that would’ve cut lead to 8 and gotten the pointspread cover. Bad teams be bad. Both these teams are brutally bad. One had to win. Betting Unders and one team getting 5 turnovers could turn ugly. But it didn’t. One for the good guys those 5 didn’t change outcome of what was a dead nutz right side call on Under.
The last game was an EZ rockin’ chair winner as we had the Vanderbilt/Hawaii “OVER 54 1/2”, a ticket casher with 5:49 left in the 3rd quarter. The game did go way Over but it was really with no thanks to the Pathetic Hawaii Offense. Vanderbilt came ready to play on Offense and posted a fantastic (197 Pass/404 Rush) effort. Vandy QB M. Wright can be the poster child for the slogan “SPEED KILLS”. We felt both Offenses would dominate bad Defenses. Hawaii passed it ok….but couldn’t make any positive scoring drives in second half. It’s going to be a long (and I mean Longggggg) season for the Island boyz and new HC Timmy Chang. The cupboard is bare.
At the end of the day we turned a zero (Week 0) into a nice (+4.0) Units. On top of that without 70 games on tap we got to get a close read on 25 or so teams. Illinois impressed as did Vandy. Northwestern showed the OL is solid and they possess a very solid run game. Vandy has some nice talent on Offense and lots of speed. Reminds me a bit of last years Wake Forest squad. I think for most part we learned more who we will be looking week to week to “bet AGAINST” though, more than we learned who we will be looking to “bet ON”.
Season #34 is officially in the books. Still one week til NFL starts so next week we can use all our time on learning a ton of teams just opening up. Hopefully we can keep ball rolling and be up way more than 1 unit (last year) when the CFB regular season hits it’s final full regular season week of games.
